13 Pieces, 7.9 Tons: How Pre-Fab Steel Frames Go Up in Days

Pre-engineered steel frames are shop-fabricated, trucked to site and bolted together. Below is data from an actual 13-piece rigid frame building.

Why Installation Is Fast

The speed comes from three design choices:

Shop-fabricated pieces: every member cut, welded and drilled in factory

Bolted connections: M20 bolts, no site welding needed

Tapered sections: tapered columns and beams use only where load is high

Pre-drilled holes: -80×10 cover plates with holes match M20 bolts

Lift-and-bolt: column lifted, beam set, bolts tightened — done

Advantages

Days not weeks — 13 pieces erected in 2–3 days with one crane

No site welding — bolted connections clean and fast

Q355B lighter — Q355B sections weigh less than Q235 same load

Tapered saves steel — tapered column uses 300mm at base, 700mm at top

Weather independent — bolted erection works in rain and cold

Disadvantages / Limitations

Factory lead time — needs 4–6 weeks fabrication before delivery

Crane needed — 1-ton pieces need lifting equipment

Bolt inspection — every M20 bolt must be torqued and checked

Transport limits — 12m columns need long trucks

Foundation prep critical — bolt group positions must match exactly

Typical Applications

Rapid-build factories — production starts in weeks

Warehouse expansion — add space fast

Temporary buildings — event halls, emergency shelters

Remote sites — no welding needed on site

Cold-weather construction — bolted works in winter

Erection Sequence

Columns lifted and bolted to base plates

Beams lifted and bolted to column brackets

Cover plates -80×10 installed at splices

All M20 bolts torqued to spec

Bracing and purlins follow

Pre-engineered steel rigid frame — 13 pieces, 7.9 tons total, Q355B tapered columns and beams, M20 bolted connections, shop-fabricated and trucked to site, erected in days for factory and warehouse buildings.
