Lattice Columns: Two Angles + Lacing = Light but Heavy-Duty

Lattice (laced/built-up) columns are made of two separate chord members connected by lacing bars, instead of a solid H-section. Below is GZ4/GZ5 lattice column from an actual heavy industrial factory drawing.

Construction Details

The lattice column consists of:

Upper solid shaft: WH400×300×10×14 H-section, carries crane bracket

Lower lattice shaft: two L100×8 angle chords separated 1,200 mm

Lacing bars: L80×6 angle bars in X-pattern between chords

Crane bracket: at ~5.25 m height

Base: 500 mm base plate at foundation

Advantages

Lightweight for heavy load — two separated angles resist buckling better than solid section

Custom depth — 1,200 mm section depth tuned to column height and load

Material efficient — angles use steel efficiently for long columns

Crane bracket integration — upper solid section carries crane load directly

Open section — easier to paint and inspect than built-up box

Disadvantages / Limitations

More fabrication labor — two chords + lacing bars take more welding

Torsion weaker than solid — open lattice has lower torsional stiffness

Lacing bars fatigue — repeated crane loads stress lacing connections

Needs closer inspection — lacing connections must be checked periodically

Aesthetic concerns — open lattice looks industrial, not clean architectural

Typical Applications

Heavy-duty factory columns — with overhead cranes

Long columns — 10+ m height where solid H is too heavy

Crane buildings — step columns for service and heavy cranes

Power plant structures — boiler house and turbine hall columns

Warehouse mezzanines — tall warehouse columns

Fabrication Notes

Two L100×8 chords cut to length, then lacing bars welded between

Upper H-section welded to top of lattice shaft

Crane bracket welded at design height

All shop-welded, galvanized or painted for corrosion protection

GZ4/GZ5 lattice column — 1,200 mm deep, upper WH400×300 solid shaft, lower double-angle L100×8 chords with L80×6 lacing, Q355B, 15.25 m tall, built for heavy crane factory use.
